This year, our social studies and literacy work will be intertwined. Our first unit of study will be the Great Depression, using the books Bud Not Buddy and Out of the Dust. We'll learn more about that time in American history as well as look for insight into how people get through hard times.

Our first science focus is properties of matter, which we'll dig into through... a study of garbage! We'll design lots of experiments and then see what we can conclude from our findings.

We’ll find multiple ways to demonstrate learning – writing more traditional reports as well as making models, movies, posters, games or other presentations that provide students with a chance to show off their understanding. We’ll often play games and solve puzzles – these offer different ways to work together, practice logical and strategic thinking, and have fun. We aim to foster a classroom community that is welcoming and inclusive so that students can grow both academically and socially.
